BFS 2007  focused on the various principles and issues of the regional context of Borobudur conservation planning. The participants were divided into two groups, the Macro Scale and the Micro Scale groups.

Kedu Plain and surrounding mountains – Macro Scale Group

The cultural landscape is fashioned from a natural landscape by a cultural group.  Culture is the agent, nature is the medium, and the cultural landscape is the result.

Elements of cultural landscape in the Kedu Plain setting include:

  • paddy felds
  • animals (especially endangered species) and vegetation
  • villages
  • mountain backgrounds
  • special elements (temples, baths, rural-agro and geo-tourism, religious tourism, dance,

local enterprise, etc.).

These elements represent unique characteristics of the Kedu Plain and the surrounding

mountainous region. Landscape analysis reveals that a combination of micro elements creates

the macro cultural landscape setting.

Integrated management of the cultural landscape requires:

  • large-scale environmental management, which should be done by government (e.g. a

master plan and regulation/law)

  • small-scale environmental management, which should be done by the local community

(e.g. daily cultural activities).

Heritage Trail Program – Micro Scale Group

The Micro Scale Group considered the response of local people to visitors with different

backgrounds; for example, by:

  • organizing a Heritage Trail (BFS in collaboration with local community)
  • enhancing homestay programs in different villages.

Impressions of villages surrounding Borobudur Temple involve aspects in the:

  • non-physical category:

– skill or ability (communication, interaction, friendliness, hospitality)

– traditional processes

– normal daily life

– promotion of village products

– intangible cultural heritage

  • physical category:

– sanitation

– natural potential

– tourist information (maps, signboards, brochures, leaflets)

– greenery

– tourisms service (accommodation, toilets, public phones, information centers, access)

– artifact potential

– regulations for design guidelines
