INTERNATIONAL SUMMER COURSE ON JOGJA WORLD BATIK CITY: Balancing Creative Economy and Heritage Saujana Conservation to Foster Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Heritage saujana (cultural landscape) conservation is the main focus in the field of heritage conservation in the Department of Architecture and Planning, Faculty of Engineering, UGM. In the year 2016, this department successfully conducted the International Summer Course on Imogiri Heritage Saujana with the theme Participatory Planning on Batik Eco-Museum”. This Summer Course 2016 was also an integral program with the Jogja International Batik Biennale (JIBB) 2016, as a program from Jogja World Batik City. In 2014, the World Craft Council designated Jogja as the World Batik City 2009, and Batik Indonesia was inscribed as UNESCO Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The distinctive character of local traditional batik could not be separated from the quality of surrounded saujana (cultural landscape).

This year, 2021, the program highlights on the International Summer Course on Jogja World Batik City that will be conducted under the theme of: Balancing Creative Economy and Heritage Saujana Conservation to Foster Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Course Description

The Summer Course will be organized online in several programs, there are:

  4. Jogja Heritage Saujana
  5. Indigo, Spice Route and Agriculture in Jogja
  6. Cultural & Natural Mapping of Jogja Historic Urban Landscape
  7. Community Development & SDGs in Jogja
  8. Circular Economy for Jogja Heritage Saujana Conservation
  • International E-Public Forum
  1. Creating Cooperation and Partnership among the World Craft Cities and Worldwide Cultural Institutions.
  2. Saujana Heritage Conservation
  3. The Role of Community on the Cultural & Natural Heritage Conservation
  4.  Intangible Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Development
  5. Heritage Economy in Promoting SDGs
  • Virtual heritage tours:
  1. Heritage City of Jogja
  2. Batik Production: Puro Pakualaman, Winoto Sastro, Apip Batik, Galeri Batik Jawa.

Learning Outcome

  1. Participants’ understanding on:
  • the relation of outstanding local crafts, that is Batik, and its built and natural environment known as heritage saujana;
  • the history of Batik and its recognitions as the UNESCO Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity and Jogja World Batik City
  • the roles of Batik as Culture Diplomacy & Creative Economy
  • the roles of Jogja heritage saujana conservation to foster SDGs.
  1. Increase the skills and experience of participants in building the balance of the creative economy & conservation practice of heritage saujana in fostering SDGs of Jogja World Batik City.
  2. Compilation of participant documents in building the balance of creative economy and heritage saujana conservation as strategies in fostering SDGs, in the context of Jogja World Batik City

Method 

The Summer Course uses several learning methods, including:

  1. Series of E-lectures limited to registered student participants only. One class one lecturer, 8 classes
  2. International E-Public Forum will be opened to general public. There will be 5 forums and each forum will have 4 or 5 panelists.
  3. Virtual tours to Jogja Heritage City & Batik Producers limited to registered student participants only. 3 virtual heritage tours.
  4. Every students will be have their own assignment and grouping in the related topic lead by one mentor. There will be 6 groups & 6 mentors.
  5. Final E-presentation
  6. Closing Ceremony and virtual Jogja Batik fashion show will be open for general public

Output 

The participants knowledge on the Jogja World Batik City, digital archives of all programs and the assignment results on the balancing creative economy and heritage saujana conservation as strategies in fostering SDGs. Last but not least, strengthening the cooperation among participants, facilitators, and universities.
